Alexandre et Fils Description:
Alexandre & Fils is a faithful rendition of a French brasserie, complete with brass fittings, leather banquettes, red velvet and, in the summertime, rattan chairs on the terrace. Even the waiters, dressed in black pants, white shirts and black bow ties, can be very Parisian in attitude, in a sometimes gruff, sometimes exuberant, yet always effective way. Open late every day, this restaurant, which also features an upstairs pub, can be a bit of a party place. The menu covers all the French bases, from soupe à l'oignon and escargots to steak tartare, cassoulet, sauerkraut, boudin, duck confit or even grilled marrow bones with Guérande salt. The wine list is strictly French, with Bordeaux and Burgundy leading the way. Desserts follow down the same path, with crème caramel, nougat glace, chocolat mousse and crème brûlée. Even the fries are noteworthy in this bistro; almost more French than the French can do it at home.

Review :
I've been going to Alexandre et Fils for many years (probably 10 times over 20-30 years, i.e. every time I get a chance to go to Montreal), and I always walk away happy after a meal. It's one of those places that you do but don't want to share with others (for fear of overcrowding if you recommend it, which I am doing now). Even now, writing this, I wish I could go there tonight or tomorrow for lunch.
