Otto Bar Bistro Gourmet Description:
Otto is a terribly smart and stylish (and not too terribly expensive) bistro on what is high-end Polanco's most prominent corner, making for fantastic people-and-pooch-watching, day or night. That maybe could mean the food becomes a second thought, but in fact, Otto is more than just a pretty face. The contemporary menu will remind you of similar places in Miami and L.A., with ambitious recipes that draw on unusual, but well-combined ingredients as well as some reliable standbys: soups like roast tomato and minestrone, and an extensive (for Mexico City) list of delicately constructed and properly dressed salads (the caprese and the niçoise are standouts). The richly seasoned steak tartare---available in both beef and tuna iterations---is tonic to morning-after types with bed-head and pricey sunglasses. Pastas are vegetarian-friendly and entrées range from citrus-y seafood creations to a Flintstones-worthy osso buco. Desserts are limited, but satisfying, heavy on European-style pâtisseries. Arrive early for prime sidewalk seating. And while your fellow diners may not be the most approachable crowd, the attentive waitstaff treats everyone the same: like a fabulous---if not quite famous---"somebody." Otto's bar scene is very much part of the fun, with a solid wine list and well-executed cocktails.
