Review :
The HOTEL DIVISADERO BARRANCAS located on the rim of Copper Canyon, in Mexico, is located at a very beautiful view overlooking the canyon. That is where the value ends. There are no other hotels or restaurants located within miles. Once there, you are without options. This is the ingredient for a first class "TOURIST TRAP" and that is what you have here.
For example, just because you may have reserved and paid for a "canyon view" room does not mean that that is what you will get. It seems that check-in can become a bidding war for the view rooms. The low bidder gets a sewerage view room without a refund. The sewerage odor, of which, can be smelled in the canyon view rooms also.
There is absolutely no security for your baggage, the handling cost of which you pay in advance. The bag(s) are left at the rail-side unattended for as long as it takes one old man to haul them some 250 yards up and down hill, on a dolly eight at a time. This is no big thing unless dozens of other unsuspecting travelers are getting off for the hotel at the same time and the handling of bags, in our case, took 1 1/2 hours in which time the luggage was unattended and could easily have been stolen.
The entire attitude of the whole staff is definitely "ANTI-AMERICAN". This starts with the owner and works its way down to the room cleaners who will walk in to your room when they want to clean it, even with a Do Not Disturb sign on the door, look at you in bed and say "HI" and start to clean.
Don't ask for a wine list as there was none. In our case, they brought a bottle to the table and your choice was "Yes or No". The price would be discussed later. You can guess this was the most expensive bottle of wine we bought in Mexico.
The food was a 3 on a scale of 10, cheaply made, with barely adequate proportions, and very poor service, but remember, you have no other choices.
The biggest problem though, was the result of the original construction. The walls/floors are paper thin. If you were on the ground floor, you heard every move the people above you made. All in our group felt that, for this reason, they got the worst night sleep of the two week trip. The left over building materials were thrown into the canyon where based on the smell, the sewerage is also.
At 12:00 noon, they want you out of the hotel even though the train may be one to two hours from the stop. They already know that no one that has stayed there will ever return so you are dismissed go to the rail siding to wait for the train in the sun. There are no benches, chairs, etc.
I try very hard to not be the over-demanding, Ugly American when travelling outside the U.S., understanding that other people's customs, service standards, etc. differ from our own and that if I expected American service, I should have stayed in the U.S. However, I also recognize a "get rich quick" operation that screams "to hell with the customer, you won't come back anyway". This is the ultimate "Tourist Trap" and those considering the Hotel DIVISADERO BARRANCAS need to know what they will be exposed to in order to enjoy this wonderful view of Cooper Canyon. There are many other, very accommodating hotels with great views of the canyon in Divisadero proper that other travelers on the train highly recommended. These should be considered first.
