Impastato's Description:
No restaurant is more closely associated with the New Orleans Saints football team, and the collection of memorabilia is all the more impressive because the athletes honored by all these displays are frequently in attendance. Proprietor Joe Impastato opened his namesake restaurant in 1979. After scanning the room for gridiron heroes, most diners settle in for the five-course special dinner, which comes with a choice of one of at least ten entrées. Named for the Saints' coach, trout Payton, which is fried and served with mushrooms, artichoke hearts and knuckles of lump crab meat, is a standout. Pass on the shrimp Giuseppe, made with tiny shrimp, but, when it is available, do try the soft-shell crab Marcello. There's no point in saving room for dessert, which consists of unimpressive slabs of cakes and pies. Despite the sports bar décor, Impastato's dresses up for fine dining. Some of the waiters wear tuxedos, as does the lounge singer, Roy Picou.
