South of Beale Description:
As the name implies, South of Beale (affectionately referred to as S.O.B.) is located several blocks south of Memphis' tourist-driven Beale Street entertainment district. But the mood of the place couldn't be further away. There's no live blues at this pub, just gourmet grub and tasty microbrews. Menu selections, such as braised beef short rib pie and grilled venison rack, rotate by season but the S.O.B. Burger never goes out of style. The namesake burger is loaded high with Gruyère cheese, caramelized onions and fried pickles and is served with Cajun potatoes. Those simply enjoying S.O.B.'s generous happy hour drink specials will find plenty of small bites for noshing, like potato and pea samosas with sweet onion chutney and roasted beet salad with blue cheese. Comfort fare with a specific ethnic ancestry appears in the pierogis, here filled with bacon and cabbage. Dining late? S.O.B. offers seven menu items, including bacon bar pie and chickpea falafel pita, on its late-night menu after 10 p.m. The wine list offers every choice by the glass, another comforting notion. But then this bills itself as Memphis' first gastropub.
