Carved out of a former Howard Johnson's, the Concord branch of this local Italian chain epitomizes the changing tastes of America. Now, instead of sandwiches and ice cream, you get bruschetta and tiramisu. The only thing like it for miles, it offers a full bar, adequate wines and a wide-ranging menu (for kids as well as adults) featuring elegant salads and designer pizzas that put the Cal before the Ital, as well as an extensive selection of cream- and butter-laden pastas, veal chops and chicken cutlets that put the true-blue American after it. Still, it could be much worse than pedestrian; reliability and friendliness have kept this franchise afloat.
