Toi on Sunset Description:
This tiny Hollywood restaurant serves Thai food with a lot of atmosphere. The interior is dimly lit by small lamps, television sets silently blaring cartoons or bad movies, and the glowing green eyes of the dragon built from scrap metal. The walls are plastered with rock posters, strange sculptures, odd pictures, and other random stuff. There's even a five-foot paper-mache mask.
Some tables are short -- you sit on the floor to eat. They also have booths and regular tables.
Toi attracts a trendy Hollywood crowd, and rumor has it that famous people eat here.
It can be difficult to get a table here on weekends, and it doesn't handle large groups well.
Toi also has a location on Wilshire Boulevard.
Toi is so punk rock that you feel slightly out of place as a regular Joe. It's your inner child that suspects you might just have become a little conventional. But fret not as no one will even pay attention. People are either admiring the rockin' wall décor while they wait for their food, patting themselves on the back for being cool or eagerly attacking their large plates of delicious (but not exactly authentic) Thai fare. Toi tastes best after a late night of painting the town red---they're open until wee 4 a.m.---but even at a more appropriate dinner time we have thoroughly enjoyed their vegetarian curry, pad thai (not too sweet here like at some places), chicken satay appetizers and tom kha kai soup. We hear the Thai spaghetti is popular but we have thus far shied away from such oddities. Out-of-town friends will be sufficiently impressed with the scenester Hollywood vibe and more than decent Thai goods.
