RockSugar Pan Asian Kitchen Description:
RockSugar Pan Asian Kitchen, a project from The Cheesecake Factory's founder David Overton, is a chef-driven restaurant that takes diners on a culinary journey of Southeast Asia with flavors from Thailand, Vietnam, India, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Oversize red doors lead into the 7,500-square-foot space where Buddhist monk and dragon sculptures watch over this timber temple. (Ask to be seated next to one of the water walls that line the indoor-outdoor patio.) Chef/co-owner Mohan Ismail hails from Singapore and boasts experience in the kitchens of Spice Market, Tabla and Blue Hill in New York. Start with lacquered barbecue ribs with chili-caramel sesame glaze or the Vietnamese summer rolls stuffed with shrimp, pork and mint. Family-style main dishes range from grilled kumquat chicken to tender Vietnamese duck curry to ginger-soy black cod with shiitake mushrooms, bok choy and tofu. Tempting desserts include the coconut doughnuts with passion fruit sauce, kaffir lime cheesecake, and crème brûlée with mango and spiced chocolate. Slake your thirst with a Southeast Asian beer or an exotic cocktail such as the signature RockSugar mojito muddled with lime, cilantro, shiso and mint.

Review :
Had dinner here last week. The restaurant is not like Cheesecake Factory at all. The decor was more along the lines of Buddha Bar in New York (very elaborate- too elaborate for my taste). I was pleasntly surprised by the food. I was expecting PF Chang-style Asian food, but the dishes that we tried were actually pretty authentic tasting. The green curry was very flavorful, the pork noodles in broth were delicious, and the fried rice had real Chinese sausage in it. The cocktails were refreshing, but a bit too sweet (we had a couple of different Champagne drinks). Beware on weekend nights, though. We went on a Friday night and there was a long wait even w/ reservations. They need to be better organized with that.
