Susan Feniger's STREET Description:
Susan Feniger has been writing Los Angeles culinary history since 1981 with City Café, City Restaurant, Border Grill and Ciudad with her partner Mary Sue Milliken. After training in France and regular travels to India, Thailand and Mexico, Feniger opened City Restaurant, her first concept of "street" food in 1985, before specializing in Mexican and Latin cuisines with the later places. Now with STREET, she went back to her cooking roots and spent more time in India, to introduce more exciting street-food dishes. They come not only from India but from many other parts of the world. From Singapore, try the kaya toast, a grilled toast filled with coconut jam to dip in a sunny side-up egg. Move to Japan with marinated shrimp rolled with shizo, and to China with Cantonese white radish cake served with a sweet Chinese sausage. Dumplings are Indian-inspired, made of crispy dal topped with yogurt and mint sauce, and tamarind date chutney. Cuba brings stuffed potato cakes filled with spiced beef, raisins and capers. The Thai bites, which are categorized as "share with the table," are so good that you might not want to do so: baby collard leaves that you fill with tamarind palm caramel, fresh toasted coconut, peanuts, dry shrimp, ginger and chilies. As you can imagine reading these rather exotic dishes, the same treatment goes for the noodles, soups, stews, curries and salads as well as the items baked in the wood oven---yes, a wood oven on Highland Avenue---like Korean short ribs or the Egyptian-style baked fish. We like ending the feast with the Turkish donuts or espresso-chocolate halva. Whether you sit on the great outdoor patio or inside, you will definitely like the décor of upscale graffiti. Thursdays and Sundays, the lounge in the mezzanine welcomes a jazz duo for diners to listen to while sipping a specialty cocktail or a glass of wine from the short list.
