Is your destination Los Angeles International Airport or Los Angeles Intergalactic Airport? You may wonder if you decide to have a meal at Encounter Restaurant & Bar. The landmark building looks like a giant flying saucer. Inside, the futuristic design is a cross between the dive in Star Wars and the cave in The Flintstones. We love the bar, with its percolating lava lamps and soda dispensers that emit the sounds of ray guns. Designer martinis are de rigueur. Good fare ensures Encounter is more than a stop for weary travelers. Does the food take alien form? Not quite, but the Caesar salad has short stalks of romaine lettuce bunched together by a huge crouton ring and the ahi poke is in the shape of a puck and served with mounds of green and black caviar and tortilla strips. If you have time to kill during a layover, visit the Landmark Theme building Observation Deck two levels above the restaurant during the day and take in the panoramic views.
