Joining a flurry of upscale downtown Latino eateries is this California Plaza restaurant, which does not approach the sophistication of nearby Rivera. CASA serves up seasonal, modern Mexican cuisine in a contemporary hacienda setting. Lunch is taqueria-style, while a more formal dinner menu begins with antojitos (small bites) like flautas de pollo or ahi with chipotle aïoli. Larger plates include an upmarket take on steak fajitas with caramelized onions and chimichurri crema, and lobster-and-shrimp enchiladas with butternut squash sauce. Among happy endings are churros with chocolate dip and plantains Foster. From the bar, lavender and guava margaritas make good pairings for a menu and setting that encourage festive dining. A variety of casitas, seating from three to 20 guests, accommodate intimate gatherings, both indoors and out.
