Essex Public House Description:
Just off Hollywood & Highland, this stylish but unpretentious eatery offers honest American pub food and a fine selection of craft beers. Old-school touches include warm brick walls, hanging lamps, comfy leather banquettes and a classic-alt rock 'n' roll soundtrack. Owner Greg Link has shifted his original upscale gastropub menu to more traditional fare based on high quality American bar food---burgers, pizzas, sandwiches and whimsical desserts. Hot wings are choice and meaty with a vinegary tang, and the savory mac 'n' cheese remains a tad upscale melding white cheddar, manchego, jarlsberg, mascarpone and prosciutto with peppadew. Hearty shepherd's pie is kicked up a notch by savory braised short ribs, and a surprising show stealer is the giant Cuban sandwich. Twenty craft beers on tap are $5---a great price for Hollywood---with a pleasing selection ranging from Shiner Bock to Lost Coast Apricot Wheat. Bottled beers offer global picks from Hitachino White Ale to Telegraph Rhinoceros Rye. The desserts---deep fried Twinkies and Oreos---will satisfy your nostalgic sweet tooth, but we prefer the creative "beer cocktails" Link has concocted, especially the Nut-N-Honey, an unlikely but compelling blend of Lester Young, Frangelico, Barenjager and honey simple syrup.
