Tamarind Description:
January 2001 saw the respected Michelin guide award a star to Tamarind, Mayfair – the first Indian restaurant to achieve this accolade. In January 2003 Tamarind retained its Michelin star for the third consecutive year. Previous accolades have included 'Best Indian chef in the UK' and 'Best Indian Restaurant in the UK'. Offers Halal food.
This sophisticated restaurant has a flair suited to its Mayfair location. Tables are large and well-spaced, seating is comfortable and tableware is elegant. Shades of gold mirror the polished wooden floors. The cooking continues to provide fireworks with chef Alfred Prasad at the helm. Cooking is classical Indian without resorting to disorientated "fusion." The spicing is subtle and even dishes marked on the menu with a flame symbol are not too hot, although an enticing chilli bite may lurk under the clear flavours of main ingredients. Grilled scallops and fried squid with rocket and chard comes with a lime and chaat masal dressing, or try tandoor skewers of chicken flavoured with coriander, chilli and mixed pepper on mint chutney. Vegetarians are well looked after with dishes which tempt the carnivore as well. Wines surf the world, offering a good selection. Set 2-course lunch £19.95, 3 courses £24.95; Tasting menu £28.95; pre- and post-theatre dinner £28; dinner menus £48-£72.
