St Johns Description:
An lovely oasis of cultured cuisine in an otherwise neglected area of London between the chattering classes of Tufnell Park and the windswept emptiness of the Archway roundabout.
Food is a wonderful mix of British, French and North African, with a strong emphasis on presentation but with no skimping on portion sizes. [...] The wine list is extensive and provides some wonderful combinations for a party of 4 or more [...].
The main dining area lies in the back of a rather inauspiciously fronted Victorian pub, but is a huge barrel-vaulted hall with the walls coated in local contemporary art. [...]
Shock horror! A gastropub near Archway. But wait, this might once have been a pretty dire area for restaurants, but it's steadily, if a little slowly, going upmarket (helped by projects like the private housing created in the former church nearby). But even without the local gentrification, St. John's would succeed, as it combines serious food with a friendly, local pub atmosphere. The cooking is gutsy and honest, with formidable dishes, all chalked-up on blackboards and changing daily like lamb shank with couscous, seared tuna, and wonderful crumbles and chocolate puddings. There's an open fire at one end of the restaurant for cold days, and a few tables in a tiny garden for the summer.
