Mantanah is outside central London but those determined enough to find it are rewarded with some of the city's finest Thai cooking. The family business operates in a pleasantly furnished room, a simple background for varied and exciting dishes. Don't miss the soups, a major feature of Thai meals, and properly served as a side dish with the main course. Tom yum is hot-and-sour, highly aromatic, with chicken, beef or prawns. Curries are generally milder than soups but made hotter to order; choose from green, red, "jungle" or regional specialties. Other treasures include aptly named "yum yum," chilli hot salads and varied stir-fries and grills. The national signature dish is pad thai, fried rice noodles with prawns, egg, bean shoots and ground peanuts. Brown or sticky rice also makes a satisfying background for the subtle spicing of the curries. Vegetarians can choose from a special menu listing some 20-plus options.
