L'Escargot Description:
L'Escargot rambles over several floors, many rooms in an old - but beautifully maintained - building.
L'Escargot has been feeding Soho for generations---it was fashionable as long ago as the twenties. During the intervening years it has been through several different owners and several good and bad patches. At the moment the patch is good. The premises as ever are divided into two, with a large bustling restaurant on the ground floor with a bistro-style menu and a small, grand restaurant upstairs where the cooking (and the prices) go up a notch. The menu is French-based, offering classics from terrine of duck and foie gras with Cumberland sauce and tian of crab and avocado to poached lemon sole and rump of lamb with pommes boulangère and olive jus. This is traditional, rather old-fashioned cooking, but none the worse for it. After all, L'Escargot is a Soho stalwart. Ground Floor: set 2-course lunch and 6pm-7.30pm £15, 3 courses £18. Picasso Room: set 2-course lunch £20.50, 3 courses £25.50. Set 3-course lunch £40, dinner £48.
