Kettners Description:
Kettner's has an interesting history. It was founded in 1867 by a chap who had cooked for Napoleon III but fell on more modest times and became a pizza restaurant. A revamp by Ilse Crawford (Cecconi's and New York's Soho House) turned it into an elegant series of rooms with mirrors on the walls, low lights, candles and chic banquettes. There's a Champagne Bar with a series of odd, louche nooks that invite the kind of behavior that might get you arrested and another bar upstairs looking out onto Soho. The brasserie menu is modish but the cooking is patchy, so until the kitchen settles down, don't expect consistency. But the pastry chefs know their stuff, so the tart of the day is always a good bet. Fricassée of rabbit with morels is robustly tasty; pork belly meltingly good, though the crackling doesn't work. Puddings are really desserts, which is our main criticism. (For puddings you need suet and custardy bits.) But the staff is delightful. The Pudding Bar is a fine place for breakfast, a snack or afternoon tea, and there's WiFi so you can surf while tucking into chocolate cake and tea.
