Axis Description:
One Aldwych has always exuded an air of slightly edgy glamour and manages to flirt both with the City and the West End. Like the hotel, the fine dining restaurant Axis at One Aldwych attracts both sorts which makes a good mix at lunch and dinner. It's had a revamp with green silk wall hangings and a rounded wall of birch trunks made of metal as a dramatic backdrop. Executive chef Tony Fleming's style is characterized by a pared down simplicity that brings the tastes strongly and rightly to the fore. Celebrating the revival of traditional British ingredients, he brings dishes like red mullet soup, Welsh rarebit and deep fried pig's head to the starters and salads that might include smoked mackerel. Main dishes continue the theme, perhaps a curried lamb shank or simply poached breast of chicken. The à la carte menu includes a section of light dishes, and the idea is to pick a meal to suit you, so you can stray off the usual 3-course concept. There's also a good value set meal. The wine list includes some fine wines, available in very limited quantities. Set 2-course lunch and pre- and post-theatre meal £16.75, 3 courses £19.75.
