Al Duca Description:
Al Duca is the brainchild of Claudio Pulze, who brought a style of Italian cooking to London that his native countrymen recognize and applaud as the real thing. The restaurant is small, made to look bigger with mirrors and filled wine racks on the walls. It's done in pale wood with terracotta floor tiles. The cooking is inventive, with combinations that go beyond the normal Italian style. Set menus are not cheap, but this is St. James's and prime business territory. Try dishes such as the signature fried duck egg with Parmesan, potato and sun-dried tomato salad or lemon marinated raw tuna, spring onions, fennel and mixed salad for starters. Pasta is de rigueur; they use both homemade fresh and dried varieties, so check first. Mains might include roasted duck breast with braised endive and pine nuts or a beautifully cooked fish. The wine list is short and to the point, completely Italian, and carefully chosen. Set 2-course lunch £22.50, 3 courses £26.50, 4 courses £29.50; set 2-course dinner £25.50, 3 courses £27.50, 4 courses £32.50.
