City suits dominate this series of interconnecting basement rooms (the bistro is on the first floor) where wooden floors, brick walls and linen tablecloths make the place timeless. The topnotch and reasonably priced wine list, much of it decanted, may be the starting point, but it is closely followed by a menu that offers good modern French classics, some with a twist. Start with seasonal summer soup with mint; follow with lemon sole with Cornish new potatoes or roast duck with spiced confit duck won tons. This is a big operation, with the restaurant and bistro usually running at full capacity, and the kitchen manages to keep the standards consistently good. Cheese is worth saving space for, whether for the cheese itself, or as an opportunity to plunder the wine list once again. Bleeding Heart has a loyal local following, but is equally welcoming to first timers who cannot quite believe their luck at finding this gem on the edges of the City of London.
