Rowley Leigh left Kensington Place, the restaurant that was one of the first to replace formal fine dining for casual, relaxed fine dining many years ago, and opened this restaurant in Whiteleys shopping centre. The décor is light, bright and spacious with cream and beige colours. The open kitchen centres around a huge rôtisserie where well sourced chickens, poussin, beef, game and fish slowly revolve before being plated. But first go for one of the competitively priced hors d'oeuvres on the long menu, which reads like all your favourite dishes. Start with a mix of beetroot and boquerones, kipper pâté, and mackerel teriyaki with cucumber salad---all small dishes at £3.50 each so you can share. First courses range from oysters to omelets; mains include Thai green curry with prawns and ling and a selection of roasts. The wine list is relatively small but ranges far and wide; service is delightful. The restaurant is on the first floor of Whiteleys, though you can enter via the Porchester Gardens entrance. And if you are shopping in Whiteleys during the week, there's a 2-course set lunch at £16.50 and 3 courses at £19.50 to set you up for the afternoon.
