Fortnum & Mason experienced a massive makeover, bringing the majestic shop into the twenty-first century. But it's all been very discreetly done. The Fountain Restaurant is part of the refurbishment, though it's cosmetic rather than structural. The menu remains a comforting trawl around those favourites. It goes without saying that ingredients are topnotch (after all, this is the Queen's grocer). Dishes range from Lancashire black pudding to calf's liver, from smoked salmon and scrambled eggs to fishcakes…in fact all you would expect. Rare teas make an appearance and for wine lovers there's the chance to select a top bottle of wine from their shop list, then pay just £10 corkage. So naturally you order the most expensive wine you can afford.
