There aren't many African-themed venues in London, so this is one of the reasons for bbar's popularity. Another is its location, just near Victoria station (good for local office workers and commuters) and Buckingham Palace (for visitors). More plusses are the casual, friendly atmosphere helped along by the animal pictures and fabrics; a buzzing bar at the front; and a wide-ranging menu, inspired by Australian chef Bill Granger. It offers a tempting range of dishes with a something for everyone approach. Try fried calamari with aïoli or bobotie spring rolls and chutney as sharing dishes. Or go for Thai fish cakes, a wide selection of very fresh salads and mains like a cheese soufflé, fish 'n' chips and a good range from the grill, not forgetting the juicy burgers. Portions are generous, service is fun and friendly, the wine list is good and the cocktails notable.
