Smitty's Market Description:
In case you haven't heard, barbecue runs the town of Lockhart, and Smitty's owner Nina Schmidt Sells comes from a long lineage of barbecue masters. So it's no wonder that the air here is filled with smoky goodness so fragrant that you'll want to eat it. Quality meat is smoked daily over seasoned oak firewood in brick-lined pits that have been in operation since the turn of the century. Brisket is sliced thin and piled high on white bread. Spicy sausage links are house-made (a German specialty), and pork ribs are tender and rich. Sides of potato salad, coleslaw and "secret recipe" pinto beans are also justly famous. We like to garnish our meal with avocado, raw onion and cheese, and wash it down with an ice cold Shiner Bock or Big Red. This is what makes eating Texas barbecue so special. Don't dally on your way there: Smitty's closes at 6 p.m. during the week and 3 p.m. on Sundays.
