Many claim that Kreuz Market's oak-fired pits produce the best meats in the world, or at least in Lockhart, the barbecue capital of Texas. Fleshy brisket is amazingly tender; the homemade course-ground sausage is spicy and garlicky; and the smoked pork chop rivals any rib on the planet. Don't ask for barbecue sauce because they don't make it (and will claim the well-seasoned meat doesn't need it). Optional garnishes of avocado, yellow cheese and onion slices are as quirky as ever. The cavernous interior replete with 1950s Americana is a bit spooky when not filled with locals clamoring for barbecue lunches, so dine in large parties or go during peak times to stave off loneliness.
