Gaylord's Restaurant - Kilohana Description:
Gaylord's is the type of place that seems very promising from the outside. It's near Lihue, which has a dearth of nice restaurants. It's set in an old plantation manager's mansion and has a delightfully romantic outdoor eating area wrapped around the lush back garden of the Kilohana estate. It's a great spot to while away a couple of hours, but your attention is more likely to dwell on your surroundings rather than your plate. Although executive chef H. Andrew Althouse does a competent job, the menu is not especially inspired---a few pasta dishes, chicken, rack of lamb and fresh local fish, New Zealand venison and prime rib in two different sizes; but there has been an attempt to broaden it with more Asian flavors. And, the food keeps getting better. The superb setting and genteel ambience also soften any tendency toward criticism. The baby-back ribs with onion rings are one of our favorites, and they do put on a good luau and Sunday brunch. It's fun to poke around the grounds of Kilohana, making this perhaps a better choice for a less-pricey lunch or Sunday brunch.
