This fabulously-situated oceanfront restaurant has consistently maintained its gastronomic reputation through a number of chefs, with San Francisco- and Seattle-trained Todd Barretts even raising the bar. He enjoys the playfulness of creating new recipes, to the great benefit of his guests. This is one of the island's few places to eat right on the water, adjoining popular Prince Kuhio Park with its stunning sunsets and great surfer watching. The Beach House manages to be both elegant and casual, with outdoor tables fronting a coastal promenade and a sophisticated, eclectic menu. The emphasis is on top-quality local ingredients, which Barretts pairs skillfully. The blackened ahi Caesar with feta and Parmesan is so fresh and well-seasoned it reminds us of why this now standard salad was invented. Other menu stars here are a macadamia nut-crunchy crab cake with a zippy ginger-lime papaya-black bean salsa; fresh mussels crusted with shiitake mushrooms and an Asian-inflected black bean sauce; a perfectly prepared rack of lamb in a mint-coriander marinade; crispy Chinese-style roasted duck accompanied by an exquisite porcini mushroom risotto cake; and the snappy lemon grass and kaffir lime-crusted sea scallops on saffron rice with baby bok choy and a spicy chili aïoli.
