Original Pancake House Description:
This cozy, down-home family favorite adorned with assorted bric-à-brac and knotty pine walls for an early-American motif is actually part of a small, national chain founded in 1953 in Portland, Oregon. It's known for its buttermilk pancakes, french toast, and huge, lemony "Dutch baby" creations, plus soufflé-like apple pancakes and coffee cups that never run low. Extended families fill booths and tables. Order anything made with batter and you'll experience bliss. Not that the eggs aren't good, too, but the french toast and the pancakes---whether sourdough, Swedish, apple or potato---are first-rate. You pick the topping, from bacon bits to chocolate chips and slather on the whipped butter. Expect a long wait on weekends, but management eases the pain by pouring brimming cups of strong, free coffee in the small waiting area. Our advice: Call ahead to put your name on the waiting list.
