Café Juanita put suburban Kirkland on the culinary map. Ultra simple with chic beige walls and banquette seating, the restaurant is housed in a 60s-era structure in a leafy setting alongside Juanita Creek; it also has a huge stone fireplace and lovely rustic patio. Chef-owner Holly Smith's seasonally adapted Northern Italian menu may offer marinated grilled octopus with fennel and a "green" herb sauce or seared foie gras with citrus confit as starters. Mains can include braised rabbit, whole-roasted trout or roasted duck. House-made pastas are first-rate, from hand-torn semolina gnocchi paired with a saddle of Oregon lamb to partridge-filled anolini floating in a zesty lemon-ginger broth. If sweets don't suit your mood---although it's difficult to resist the rosemary chocolate ganache with limoncello foam and roasted pine nuts---there is a selection of artisanal cheeses. The wine list is impressive.
