Duo Steak & Seafood Description:
Agoraphobes should avoid DUO, which features open-air dining near the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea swimming pools. Some of the teak tables inlaid with mother of pearl feature ocean views, while indoor seating is only available during rainstorms or in the private dining room. Besides the à la carte breakfast menu, hungry diners will enjoy the prix-fixe breakfast buffet that includes tropical juices, local delicacies like "banana and cream" which features coconut milk, along with typical Western and some Japanese choices. The helpful waitstaff will cover your food when you leave the table, not only to keep it warm, but to keep the birds away. At dinner, the focus is on aged Prime beef, including Japanese Kobe, as well as seafood. The thinly-sliced Kobe sashimi appetizer is a light introduction to the legendary meat. The crab cake is light and not overly-breaded, but the subtle crab flavor is overwhelmed by the accompanying spicy gazpacho shooter. Chef Noel Badillo strikes a good balance with his pairing of salmon and white asparagus. Nice touches include four enjoyable sauces which accompany each beef and fish entrée, and the Maui onions that enhance the mac 'n' cheese side dish. There is an extensive wine by the glass program, as well as a long cocktail list including a refreshing Pacific pear martini made with lychee purée. Desserts are fine, but diners also receive cotton candy and a moist towel at the meal's conclusion.
