Huggo's Description:
With its terrace literally suspended over the reefs, oceanfront Huggo's may well be the best place in Kailua-Kona to capture the elusive green sunset flash. What started as a fishermen's drinking hole in the 1960s, founded by Huggo von Platen, a Hawaiian Hemingway and Kona resident, has grown into a popular establishment known for its live music at night, dependably good food and excellent drinks. These days, Huggo's son Eric runs the place, and decent wines by the glass are drawing Kona's business crowd and tourists alike. Naturally, Huggo's features fresh fish daily and is famous for its sashimi, which is straight off the boat. We love the grilled ahi in a lilikoi and miso beurre blanc and the rich crab-crusted ono. Here's for good steaks and pizzas as well, including a teriyaki steak that has been on the menu since 1969. Leave room for the honu pie, a caramel cheesecake with dark chocolate ganache. Reservations are a must for dinner.
