Zak's Place Description:
There aren't all that many dining options in downtown Hinsdale, so that may just play a hand in the popularity of this place. It comes from GM-sommelier Yamandu Perez, who clocked time at Gabriel's in Highwood. The setting is clubby with tony wood walls, large windows overlooking the street and deep burgundy curtains. Our favorite part of the meal, we'll admit, is the smoky, grilled romaine salad topped with spicy chipotle ranch dressing and pico de gallo. Of course, the seared foie gras is a more decadent alternative, its fresh peach and Riesling reduction cutting through the richness. Entrées, while never too out there, are certainly indulgent. Tender filet marries with black truffle sauce, while creamy mac 'n' cheese goes glam with the addition of lobster. The food is decent, even if it largely is predictable, but unfriendly, unhelpful service is disappointing and leaves us wondering if a return visit makes sense. There's a nice bar menu and a respectable wine program with a number of by-the-glass options, so perhaps that's the way to go.
