Xni Pec Description:
Xni Pec (said "shnee peck"), the Yucatan restaurant that previously lured foodies to Cicero, has relocated to west suburban Brookfield, and it's a boon for the dining depraved downtown. It's a family operation through and through, and the love shines through in regards to the food and sincere service. You won't find Mayan cuisine like this elsewhere in Chicago, which makes it all the more appealing. Sure, we didn't love everything: the empanadas, while flavorful, were greasy, and the mole had a bitter edge. But the zingy salsa is fantastic as is the achiote-infused cochinita topped with pickled red onions. The moist Yucatan-style tamal, wrapped in a banana leaf, should not be missed either. As for finales, the very sweet rice pudding is comforting (but definitely should be shared). An affordable wine list and handful of house cocktails, including sangría, ensure a complete experience.
