T'afia Description:
T'afia (the name comes from a Caribbean slang word for a pineapple-rum drink) is a dinner-only bistro, starring chef Monica Pope (formerly of Boulevard Bistrot). The cleverly restored brick building around the corner from the hip Continental Club only adds to this trendy side of downtown. Starkly industrial chic, the concrete-floored dining room has bare white tables dressed with mismatched silver and tiny glowing candles. The chef-driven menu based on local produce is just as edgy. Push the envelope by starting with sunchoke soup swirled with first-pressed nut oil. From the protein side, pick wild steelhead salmon; gold-spotted sea bass; or Monica's famous crispy flattened chicken with a breaded flour coating, flash-fried. For a head-spinning culinary experience, put yourself in the chef's capable hands and try the local market tasting menu that might include Texas-raised quail or venison flank steak paired with Texas wines. Carrot cake is our favorite finale. Come back for the Saturday morning Midtown farmers market in the T'afia parking lot and stock up on homegrown goodies.
