Chef Ed Kenney serves high quality eats in the bright, spare setting of the Hawaii State Art Museum. Blond wood accents and contemporary art impart an airy composed look. Options abound at the counter. Order a combo plate. Choose an oversize sandwich with perhaps a side of fried lotus chips, salad (the menu is constantly in a state of rotation, but some winners include the manchego, jícama and snow peas version or the warm roasted chicken with pecans), quiche, soup and generous spoonfuls of a variety of antipasti. Either way, fresh sandwiches like Kenney's Italian-cured meat and arugula or a vegetarian tomato, goat cheese and tapenade satisfy the mid-afternoon void; portions are anything but demure. Many of the dishes are Spanish-influenced, like the tortilla española with tomato pesto. Stick around for the churros and chocolate or a moist olive oil cake before continuing your stroll through the museum.
