House Without a Key Description:
What images House Without a Key conjures up! Anyone familiar with the Charlie Chan mysteries will recognize that title. Novelist Earl Derr Biggers conceived the series while staying in a Halekulani cottage in 1925. The first book was called House Without a Key, supposedly based on a real-life murder and its solution. In any case, it's a wonderful story, and it's easy to see how a writer could be inspired by these surroundings. Located in Honolulu's grand hotel, House Without a Key is the Halekulani's casual eatery. A giant kiawe tree shelters the restaurant, and the room is open and airy, with plenty of tables outside. The food is basic---- hamburger, steak, salmon, with some Asian touches---but it's all high-quality. The drinks are substantial and come with a basket of wonderful homemade potato chips. Absolutely the best part is watching former Miss Hawaii's Kanoe Miller and Debbie Nakanelua dance the hula with the sun setting into the Pacific behind them.
