Merriman's remains a Big Island favorite, and both lunch (a casual sandwich-or-glorified-plate-lunch affair) and dinner (creative, exploding with flavors and unexpected twists) are usually packed. Peter Merriman, a leading pioneer of Hawaii Regional cuisine, opened his eponymous eatery in 1990 and has had a loyal following since. He now lives on Maui, but he shows up often, and his team maintains his vision of using only high-quality fresh, local ingredients. The menu changes with seasons and farmers' crops. We are passionate about the sweet corn from Hilo, served family-style. Try the pupu taster platter with local goat cheese and shrimp fritters. If available, order the salad made of Lokelani Farm tomatoes, the best Hawaii has to offer. As for entrées, we always appreciate the wok-charred ahi, a signature dish, and we trust all fresh fish and prime cuts, which are paired with unusual relishes and sauces that match and enhance. The wine list includes many lesser-known varietals and wines from small, organic vineyards, all at reasonable price, with many served by the glass.
