Originally opened in 1924, The Westin Book Cadillac Detroit has been extensively renovated to become, once again, an elegant downtown fixture. Its restaurant, 24Grille, is all steel columns, pipes and ducts---original but painted black. Silver-studded, black velvet details and lustrous wood feel both Art Moderne and twenty-first century. The food here is the real deal, too---creative, intriguing and oh-so-well prepared and presented. For those looking to graze, plates like flash-fried calamari with spicy chili aïoli and lemon caper beurre blanc; crab lasagna with warm tomato coulis, toasted pine nuts and herb salad; and an artichoke purse filled with mascarpone and chives in veal sauce delight. Other musts include the Shell Bake---braised short ribs with shaved garlic, wilted escarole and golden raisins with horseradish-laced hollandaise. Whatever you order, do nibble on smoked sea salt french fries and truffle white cheddar mac 'n' cheese. Desserts are memorable; look no further than the ice cream cart to get your fix. The value-driven wine list features vinos from around the globe, its bottles hailing from obscure, boutique wineries and well-known houses alike. The list of sparkling wines is quite extensive, too, with more than 40 selections available by the glass at the Champagne Bar.
