Empire Baking Company Description:
The intoxicating smell of bread and other baked goods makes you order way too much at Empire. You might pop in for one of their pre-made, overstuffed sandwiches, but you'll probably also end up with a cookie for dessert, bread for dinner, and something sweet for the next morning. And the good news is that this stuff tastes as good as it looks. The boxed lunch is a bargain (and can feed two non-ravenous people.) We especially like the dilled egg salad on sourdough, the chicken salad with toasted almonds and celery on walnut scallion bread, and the roast beef and horseradish on onion rye. Opt for one of the side salads instead of chips (we like the penne pasta with sun-dried tomatoes, fete cheese, scallions and toasted pine nuts in a balsamic vinaigrette.) and choose a slice of lemon poundcake for dessert -a feast for $10! Plan on getting your food to go, as just two of the locations have seating inside, and these tables are usually full.
