The Butcher Shop Steakhouse, a Chula Vista institution since 1968, has the Vegas steakhouse vibe down cold---velvet wallpaper, blinking lights, leather banquettes and even an über-charming Wayne Newtonesque host. You expect Frankie, Dean or Sammy to sidle around the corner any minute. Well, it almost could happen---the photo-lined walls confirm The Butcher Shop has many celebrity fans. We like the friendly, smiling old-school attitude here---and the throwback menu. Start with the gargantuan shrimp cocktail with sinus-clearing red sauce---it's one of the best in town. Steak---corn-fed Nebraska beef, to be exact---is the main attraction. We prefer the top sirloin with baked potato and mushrooms à la carte. Each entrée comes with a retro iceberg salad and a choice of baked potato, double-baked potato or steak-cut fries. Don't feel like red meat? There are also charmers like chicken stuffed with ricotta and artichokes in a beurre blanc sauce or tasty king crab legs. We're impressed with the authentic tiramisu, with its deep espresso and tangy-sweet mascarpone flavors.
