CHEF DAKOTA WEISS HAS JUST ARRIVED IN THE KITCHEN. WE WILL LET HER SETTLE DOWN. The iconic Art Deco Hotel Shangri-La in Santa Monica has finished a major renovation, which, coincidentally, also introduced a modest restaurant to the property. The fare in the cozy dining room is best described as California-style with a Santa Monica farmers market flair, yet there are a number of other influences found on the menu. The ground floor location allows views over Ocean Avenue and Palisades Park, as well as distant ocean views (those yearning for quality ocean vistas need only venture to the hotel's bar on the roof). The modern design in the dining room is complemented by ocean breezes coming through the windows and a curved wooden bar that has already become a local's secret for a neighborhood meal. Standout appetizers include the fresh oysters served with a trio of dipping sauces, or the Prime beef carpaccio partnered with roasted beets and a horseradish mousse. For entrées we recommend the roasted ocean trout with a spring vegetable cassoulet in a nasturtium broth, as well as the duck breast served with creamed spinach, baby turnips and a dash of cherries. After dinner diners should take advantage of the red bell pepper sorbet, or simply go for a stroll by the beach.
