Sadie Katz Deli Description:
As any Vermonter can tell you, delicacies like matzoh ball soup and crispy potato latkes long demanded lengthy drives to more diverse restos outside Boston or Montreal. Nothing in the North Country approximated these old school dishes until Sadie Katz arrived. The Jewish deli, forever coveted by exurbanites, has done well in Burlington. Retrofitted into a narrow diner just off Church Street, the city's first kosher delicatessen offers lox omelets and hot pastrami on rye (minus the caraway seeds) among other deli favorites. Craving corned beef? The Rueben sandwich is stuffed with salty ribbons of meat then grilled with Swiss cheese to a buttery turn. There are complimentary pickles (full and half-sours) plus a perky potato salad that's tart and creamy and flecked with bits of crunchy green peppers. Best of all, the beverage counter comes stocked with Dr. Brown's Cream Soda, Cel-Ray Tonic, and chocolate phosphates.
