Chinese food is not hard to come by in most cities, and Boise is no different. However, locally-owned Yen Ching surprises by rising above the rest. With simple décor and run-of-the-mill booth-style seating, the atmosphere is blasé. But there is no disappointment when they serve up smoky General's chicken, spicy twice-pulled pork, and orange-flavored Mandarin spicy chicken. These dishes are by no means original in name, but here their unique flavor, robust with ginger and garlic, five-spice and secret spice, creates an amazing balance between interesting and comfortable. Add on a plate of dry-cooked string beans tossed with ground pork and you'll hope your fortune cookie says, "Business travel will bring you back soon."
