Irondale Cafe Description:
The setting across from the railroad tracks won't disappoint visitors who saw the film made from actress and author Fannie Flagg's book, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café. The author's great-aunt, Bess Fortenberry, owned the original restaurant, past which trains still roar. Servers dish out about 600-800 slices of the now-famous fried green tomatoes daily. But an array of Southern specialties awaits on a steam table, including field peas, fried okra, creamed corn, sweet potato soufflé, country-fried steak and meatloaf. Jim Dolan, who has owned the café since 2000, adds his own creative touches. An option might be okra and corn fritters or if it's during the holidays, creamy baked oysters. Save room for desserts such as blackberry bread pudding, homemade buttermilk pie or Mississippi mud cake. While dinner is served, you need to dine early as the place closes at 7 p.m.
