Rojo Description:
People-watching is one of the pleasures at this casual neighborhood café. The location, across from Rushton Park, makes the front patio a great place to watch joggers and dog walkers on winding Highland Avenue. Owners Laney DeJonge and Clark Lopez offer tasty, inexpensive dishes on a duel Latin and American menu. Latin offerings include organic steak fajitas, mushroom burritos and chipotle pork. Quesadillas stuffed with shrimp and cheese are a favorite. On the American side, burgers or cilantro chicken pasta are good choices. Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays leans back to the Latin side with chorizo con huevos and breakfast burritos. Organic wines are offered on the short wine list. Other libations include imported and domestic beers, house-made sangría and one of the best margaritas in town. One unique offering: Rojo opens the first Monday of each month for the Sidewalk Salon, where the Birmingham filmmaking community gets together and listens to a guest speaker on movie-related issues. Doors open at 6 p.m. for this event and all are welcome to attend.
