El Gaucho Bellevue Description:
Seattle's swanky '30s-style supper club has an outpost in Bellevue. Although the Eastside version offers the same luxurious ambience, professional service and expense account prices, plus an appealing happy hour, it lacks the theatrical glamour of its big city sister. Soaring two-story windows, a large dining room set with elegant tables, and live music create a striking first impression, but it's more like a cruise ship than an intimate dining room. For a more private experience, request a leather banquette on the half-mezzanine level where it's also much quieter. You'll want to order a martini here, even if you don't usually drink them, a pricey but properly grilled steak, and a side of lobster mashed potatoes. Because entrées at El Gaucho are à la carte, order a few sides to share; our recommendations are the wild mushroom risotto and sautéed spinach. Tableside preparation is an El Gaucho signature, so order the Caesar salad or the Salad 410, a huge salad with generous portions of crab and shrimp, and a total steal at $10. Although renowned for quality beef (a sirloin burger on a focaccia bun is offered at lunch), the spicy Wicked Shrimp---prawns poached in lobster broth---and brochette of grilled scampi or diver sea scallops will please non-carnivores. For a dramatic ending, order the legendary flambéed bananas Foster.
