Cepe Description:
Come to Beijing and eat Italian food? Sounds unlikely, but if you're going to do it you might as well do it right and dine at Cepe. The theme here is mushrooms; the restaurant has its own humidor to nurture the rich, earthy flavorings which are the backbone of many of the dishes. They come from southwest China's Yunnan province---some are farmed but many are wild. The space is fairly small but sexy with deep reds and browns and little curtained booths for those who like to romance their pasta. The waitstaff glides about in the background so that service is hushed and efficient. The northern Italian cuisine from chef Eugenio Iraci---pastas, risottos, seafood, rack of lamb with rosemary potatoes---is beautifully presented but nothing too pretentious. The tuna tartare with seaweed salad is fresh and zesty while the grilled Mandarin fish with cream of potato and black ink infusion is a standout. As for drinks, you shouldn't have a problem. The wine list is 33 pages alone.
