Golden West Cafe Description:
Expanded digs down the street from the old rowhouse on The Avenue in Hampden have given Golden West Café a full bar and lots more seating. But larger quarters have not altered chef/owner Thomas Rudis's basic recipe: funky décor and eclectic cooking at very decent prices make a winning combination. The menu, based on the flavors Rudis loves, remains much the same. From New Mexico come dishes like huevos rancheros and frito pie, both served with his lush green chile sauce. Asia inspires Vietnamese salad of warm grilled shrimp over cool rice noodles with crushed peanuts and nuoc nam sauce. Even sandwiches have a twist, like turkey and Brie with mango chutney, served with a side of sesame noodles. All is fresh, tasty, and presented with care. Be forewarned: The frozen margaritas pack a wallop!
