Murphy's Description:
Tom Harvey left ONE. midtown kitchen for Murphy's to continue producing the comfort fare that has become this neighborhood bistro's signature. Seasonal changes will have his stamp, in such dishes as a braised pork shank, which is tender, but the sweet glaze masks the flavor of the meat. We are more than fond of the fried calamari---with lots of tentacles---tender, crisp and served with a pair of totally forgettable sauces; ask for the very good aïoli instead. Standards remain: Guinness-braised beef brisket puts the warmth out to combat winter's chill. The hanger steak comes with roasted potatoes and a good tangle of fried onions on top; and this kitchen understands the term "rare." The menu offers one of the city's top burgers, too. The extensive brunch menu features omelets and waffles, but do not miss the eggs Benedict on crab cakes, topped with jalapeño hollandaise. Murphy's is also a fine wine bar, retail wine store and bakery. It's a major player in the fine wine scene, with lots of wine tasting events and good choices to take home by the bottle as well as many to be savored by the glass. The Pétalos from Descendientes de J. Palacios, a Bierzo, is a splendid choice with many of the heftier dishes. For dessert, check out the panna cotta graced with diced mango.
