Holy Taco Description:
Three companions, Zoë Cernut (from England), Robert MacDonald and chef Robert Phalen, teamed up to craft a tapas joint that has a great deal of style and personality. The crew takes its inspiration from the classic little dishes of Spain, but then reached around the Hispanic world for some of its better fare. Still, Spain is the lead voice in this chorus: a dish of two piquillo peppers stuffed with goat cheese in a lemon sherry vinaigrette comes warm with a dusting of minced chives. The salsa verde is the Mexican version, and this one is as brightly flavored as any we've ever seen, with just enough heat to add interest, but not overwhelm other flavors. We also suggest the fish tacos, with the freshly fried fish lying atop a bed of chipotle aïoli---flavorful but not too hot with spice--and the cooling crunch of a non-mayonnaise dressed slaw on top. Ingredients are organic, free-range and hormone-free. Wrap up with the churros with chocolate, in a portion that is plenty for two or even three. Tequila is the libation of choice here, although there are some decent wines and an over-fruited sangría. Every first Thursday, a tequila tasting with tapas is offered during happy hour. We wish mightily for a good Rosado, though.
